2024: The Year I Got The Watch Bug

December 28, 2024

Trust me when I say this: I did not think of myself as someone who would get infected by a bug for timepieces. But here we are. 2024 is the year that will go down in my personal history as the year I got the Watch Bug.

Now, let me explain how it all started: It was the first month of the year, and I found myself searching for the perfect timepiece — something I could wear every day. I wanted it to be sporty, casual, and above all, cool. Something that would effortlessly blend with my style while adding a touch of sophistication.

After some thorough research, I finally found it — the Casio Enticer Series, model number MTP-VD01D-1EV.1 This watch checked all the boxes: a sporty design, a durable stainless steel band, solid water resistance, and, most importantly, it came from a brand I knew I could trust.

Once I started wearing it, I could immediately feel the weight on my wrist. You see, prior to this, I had been wearing a simple Sonata all-black watch, model number: NN7924NM01/NP7924NM01 2, which was just a no nonsense timekeeper. It was not my only watch, though. I had a Panerai Automatic (Uncle’s?), but I stopped wearing it after the leather strap cracked. I also had a Tag, which I suspect belonged to my uncle, along with a few others that truly stood out. But this one was different. Maybe it was because it was the first watch I bought with my own money, or perhaps it was the fact that I wore it every single day. Either way, it felt more special than any other.

After this, I discovered the God-tier Casio F-91W 3. A legendary timepiece that has maintained its simple, timeless design for decades. Truly, it is proof that a good watch does not have to be expensive. Its enduring appeal lies in its practicality and yet remains a true symbol of durability and reliability. 7 years of battery life! Get out of here! Water Resistance? Check. Stopwatch? Check. Daily Alarm & Hourly Chime? Check.

I believe my next watch will either be a CasiOak, a classic G-Shock, or perhaps something mechanical. The possibilities excite me, but one thing’s for sure — it’ll be another step towards finding a timepiece that combines style, functionality, and everlasting design.

There is something truly captivating about owning and wearing a timepiece. And, if the watch has a history? Even better! It turns into an interesting case study. I started watching youtube videos, and my interest quickly soared! I began by learning everything I could about the brand I owned, and from there, I expanded my curiosity to explore other timekeepers, the masters behind in-house movements, and even the prestigious world of Swiss watchmakers.

It’s funny how in India, there’s this overwhelming demand for “smartwatches” that offer little to no real value. I mean, I do get the appeal — I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t once drawn to them myself. A smartwatch tracks your sleep, fitness, and offers insightful data to help you become a better version of yourself. But here’s the catch: most Indian smartwatch brands simply don’t offer value for the money you pay. Moreover, getting notifications on another screen has to be irritating if you asked me. Sure, you can pick one up for anywhere between a thousand to half a grand (rupees), but does it offer accurate data? Sadly, the answer is no.

Even giants like Apple and Samsung, who invest billions into research and development, can’t provide 100% accurate data. Yes, they might give you close results, but not as accurate. And that’s the harsh reality. Sure, those who can afford an Apple Watch can go ahead and flex once their fitness goals are met. But for the rest of us, I truly beleive investing in a good timepiece is worthwhile. Instead of purchasing smartwatches year after year, that eventually becomes e-waste garbage, you can own a few traditional watches that not only serve as timeless accessories but also as pieces you will cherish for a lifetime.
